Unfolding Your Own Myth to Freedom
and your greatest fortunes; truth, creativity and expression

On a recent visit to the Straat, The Street Art Graffiti Museum in Amsterdam. l came across the artist Kevin Ledo whose work seemed to (for me at least) reflect the essence of this concept of unfolding to freedom to allow our true expression to come forth enabling us to rewrite our stories/myths.
Myth
A popular belief or story that has become associated with a person, institution, or occurrence.
A narrative which is somehow reinforced and perpetuated in our interactions with others. Take parties for example, whether we are meeting old or new people, the conversation normally starts with so who are you? what do you do? and what’s your story? Sound familiar? With answers arising that can often stir us into inferior mode or worse still imposter syndrome.
For so many of us often unconsciously recounting the familiar story of who we are, feels like a cosy throw because we’ve been living with it so long. Not really listening to see if perhaps it still applies to where we now find ourselves today, in this moment.
Our old stories often become our myth, the myth we live by consciously or unconsciously. Famously enwrapping how we talk and see ourselves, others, our past, our life. Often illuminating potential patterns and offering insights for change if we are open enough to receive the information.
How we see and speak about ourselves is how others see us therefore, we need to witness our words as well as our actions.
Do your words mirror your truth?
In yoga philosophy and Patanjalis 8 Limbs of Yoga, he brings our attention to the importance of SATYA - TRUTH known as one of the five Yamas. Teaching us as students how to cultivate restraint from being untrue to ourselves and about ourself which ends up distorting our reality, expression and ultimately our experience of life.
“After all, language is our creation. It reflects our values, ideals, and goals, and the way see and relate to the world.”
Thich Nhat Hanh
A personal lesson
Just prior to the start of the pandemic and during the first year l had began to write the first 10,000 words of a manuscript based upon my work in yoga, psychology and technology. Doing podcasts, talks and presentations even pitching to Penguin Books. Unfortunately, nothing came of it (or so l thought.) However, looking back now l realise the richness was actually in having that particular set of experiences. Being mentored by a well known and best selling author and writing with other writers.
During the latter part of Covid l decided to park the project along with teaching and focus on my health. Four years on for the aftermath of the pandemic, l am just beginning to venture back into the fray of creativity (thankfully.) Landing onto the SubStack platform as a new way to transmit and share my thoughts and lessons with others. However, one thought that keeps arising since writing again is; Will l ever publish a book or a journal? Alongside the Myth repeating itself in my head ‘well you tried it before so what makes you think you can make it happen this time around?.)
Well the narrative had changed reflected by building upon my time as a Daily greatness Journal Ambassador with over two decades of teaching and coaching. I can craft a daily planner that has slightly different prompts and practices to offer others to whats out there already. Furthermore, it would be a great companion to my SubStack offerings for people who wish to make notes (the old fashioned way.)
Bringing an idea out of the ether to ground it in reality can always be a challenge especially when the old stories/myths start to resurface. But in every moment we can change our words/actions or both to re-write the story and hopefully cultivate a different outcome than before.
Arrived this morning a cover and journal. The cover design is mine but the content is not. However, that being said it gives me a glimpse of what can be possible so l can unfold my truth and make my vision a reality as long as l don’t allow myself to get caught up in my old myth!
The idea for the prompts and practices is to help you unpick the thread that is no longer required in your rich tapestry of your life story. Here are some Helpful Prompts & Practices for Unfolding Your Own Myth this week to get you started.
